About the Role
A growing and entrepreneurial long-distance transport company is seeking a hands-on and detail-driven Accountant to take full ownership of financial management, controls, and reporting across multiple depots. This role is critical in supporting the company’s transition into a more structured financial environment while retaining its dynamic, non-corporate culture. The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
• Perform full bookkeeping to trial balance.
• Manage high-value operational costs including fleet, bulk diesel, repairs, and payroll.
• Establish and manage control accounts for operational floats, payroll, and depot expenses.
• Monitor and forecast cash flow to ensure financial stability.
• Prepare monthly management accounts and provide actionable insights.
• Track route and contract profitability, with a focus on mining contracts.
• Support financial decision-making for expansion and fleet utilisation.
• Ensure timely and accurate VAT, PAYE, UIF, and SDL submissions.
• Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and consultants.
• Implement and maintain internal financial controls.
• Travel regularly to depots to support financial controls, reconciliations, and operational collaboration.
• Work closely with operations, fleet teams, and the Managing Director in a hands-on, entrepreneurial capacity.
Requirements
BCom in Accounting or Finance (essential).
4–7 years of accounting experience.
Experience in transport and logistics is preferred.
Exposure to owner-managed or start-up environments is advantageous.
Strong Excel skills are non-negotiable.
Experience with accounting systems such as Pastel, Sage, Xero, or similar.
Comfortable handling high transaction volumes and managing large asset registers.
Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel regularly to multiple depots.
